Apologies to anyone whose name I have misspelt.
I saw little of the top board game, but certainly elsewhere there was plenty of enterprise shown, with the games being very watchable as a result.
On 2 Paul Clapham looked as though he might find a way into his opponents position, but this proved to be an illusion. James Rothwell on 3 on the other hand went for a very double edged game, parking his king in the centre so as to create threats on both wings. Inevitably in this sort of game their are inaccuacies in play from both sides, but James had the dubious privilege of making the last mistake.
There was another double edged game on board 4 where Emma Atkins decided to mix it instead of taking the slow road to equality. It turned out to be the wrong decision.
Kidsgrove took up residence on boards 5 to 7. On 5 Robert Brock was never able to get enough of an edge to obtain the full point, on 6 Nigel Hearson was thankful for a huge knight that played a major part in preventing his opponent making progress despite having queen for knight and bishop. Chris Ford on 7 took his time to create several weaknesses before starting to eat pawns and exchange pieces. The full point was just reward for a very nicely played game.
It should have been over to juniors for the balance of the team, but with one no-show county secretary Andrew Davies found himself forced into action on board 9. He gained a definite edge, but the game eventually petered out into an opposite coloured bishop ending of the more boring type.
Calum Young on 8, Alex Brian on 11 and Adam Lovett on 12 all got the upper hand in their games and showed good temperament in refusing to allow their opponents any chance to escape. Michael Brown on 10 clearly intended his game to go the same way, but unfortunately overlooked one of his opponents counter-threats and so came off second-best.

The B team completed their season with this match at the bridge club. Calum and Emma both rapidly reached highly tactical positions. Calum pressed on too quickly and duly lost, whereas Emma decided that discretion was the better part of valour and agreed a draw. Ebrahim and Richard both had games in which fortunes swung both ways, so a win and a loss between these two boards seems fair. Peter shed a pawn in the opening, but was never able to get sufficient compensation for it, whilst James broke through with a sacrifice that may not have been sound. David found that his material advantage was no match for his opponents passed pawn, Nigel played well to reach an ending a pawn up, but a small inaccuracy enabled his opponent to escape with a draw. Paul and Chris gave nothing away in their draws, but I confess to missing the important part of Eddie's game. County secretary Andrew Davies played Adam so that everyone got a game. There were no tears, though as ever the odd cat may have been kicked in the privacy of the loser's homes.
