Newcastle Mini Congress U120 section
Sunday morning, top board.
John Blackburn's sacrificial attack proved unsound. Abdulbari Kabiri went on to come joint second.
The entrants grades suggested this would be a close competition, and we weren't disappointed. John Blackburn and Nic Wright took the early lead, but come the start of the last round Abdulbari Kabiri and Pete Shaw had moved past them. As these two had met in round 2 Roger Walker and Karol Grzybowski were thrown into the limelight as their final round opponents. In an unprecedented show of care by the winner, the Shaw-Grzybowski game still had all the pieces on the board the best part of an hour into the round. Meanwhile Roger defended well against a dangerous looking attack to emerge with the full point from his game and a share of second prize.

Elsewhere Paul Clapham found the time controls too tight whilst Stuart Hull was pleased to get the draws to go with his improved play relative to earlier in the season.
