Newcastle Mini Congress U90 section

Mini Debutants Hakim Baig, Geoff Cox and Ben Scattergood
For once this was not the biggest section, with three withdrawals on the day being partly balanced by Hakim Baig making his debut in competitive chess. I suspect he found the experience a little different to the 3 and 5 minute internet games he is used to. Geoff Cox and Ben Scattergood were also making their Mini bows.
Karol (pictured right admiring his position) warmed up in round one with a draw against his pal Nick McLean from the U120 section, the only repairing I had available when their respective opponents failed to show. He then showed no weakness until in the final round he found himself hanging on until lack of time made Richard decide that discretion was the better part of valour and accept a draw in a superior position.
Ben went into the final round needing to avoid defeat to pick up the junior prize, but still (successfully) played for the win. At one stage Geoff, his opponent, had several pawns for a piece, but they fell one by one. Although the piece was returned it was not enough for Geoff to survive.
