
A sextet of first division players arrived to do battle in he top section, each determined to give no quarter to any of the opposition. As befitted their status the top section players were still in action in each round well after most of the players in the other sections had completed their games. Allan Drost in particular was keen to use every second allowed to him, rather necessary given a style that creates positions that defy spectator analysis.
Despite the tough play Malcolm Armstrong (left) only conceded one draw in winning the section; Alan Paling found that conceding two draws resulted in second place. He did however win the club bragging rights in the triangular sub-tournament between the Newcastle players.
Malcolm also features in the picture to the right, resplendent in his leaders yellow jersey as he went head to head with Bill Armstrong in round three.
All the players managed at least one win, as can be seen in the chart below.
