Newcastle Chess Club Internal events

The club holds three regular internal competitions, results for which can be found further down the page:

The AGM Shield, is contested immediately after the completion of the AGM, which is normally the first Wednesday in September. It serves many purposes:
- to encourage attendance at the AGM
- to encourage brevity at the AGM
- to mark the end of the summer break (for those who take one)
- to provide an opportunity to remove a little rust.
The current trophy was donated by Michael Roberts
End of season quickplay, played in May, includes invited players from other clubs.
Summer ½-hour, played over three weeks includes invited players from other clubs. Michael Roberts has donated a small cup to act as trophy for this competition.

An attempt has been made to get a KO time handicap competition off the ground, but this foundered after two rounds. Several club members have also supported the Newcastle mini congress which has now been held ten times. Finally there is a club minor trophy awarded to one of the clubs lower graded players who in the opinion of the officers has had a particularly good season. The original trophy, a clock, no longer works, and has been replaced by a shield (again donated by Michael). This trophy is not always awarded.
Other competitions are held on a one-off basis. These have included a rapidplay handicap competition and crazy chess competitions near Xmas.

Time handicap KO

All of the coming seasons anticipated membership have been included in first round draw; those not wishing to play can simply concede.

Time limits: 35 moves in 70 mins followed by 15 minute quickplay finish BUT the higher graded players time to the first control is reduced by 1 min for each point difference in the grades of the players, and to the final time control by 1 min for every 5 points difference in grades.
