Newcastle Mini Congress U100 section

Action from round 5
Facing from left: Edward Day, Richard Martin and Arthur Banks

Derek continues to concentrate hard although his opponents black pieces are restricted to cowering in the out-of-picture corner.

Alberto Gissi picked up the Kangaroo prize

A dozen entries, but half-point bye requests meant that it was not until Sunday that the competition became self-contained. As ever with this section some of the games swung wildly so that the result handed in was not always the one anticipated by viewing the game even just fifteen minutes previously.

Three players entered the final round on an unbeaten three, with Julian beating carl to share the spoils with Derek. Robert West also finished the competition unbeaten, but with his only win coming in the last round, he was not in contention. Instead his major influence was in slowing Julian with a round two draw.

Scores

2½: Richard Martin, Peter Tideswell, Derrick Jones, Edward Day
