Newcastle Mini Congress U90 section

Crowd Scene from the U90 section:
Malcolm Hinley concentrates on beating Conrad Green whilst Catherine Serin and Carl Gawley catch up on their paperwork. Andy Stott, providing full point bye opposition hides behind Carl, at the end of the row is Carl Mustafa. In the background are Chris Ford (white) and Mark Whitby (black).

Just because this was the bottom section does not mean the players were trying any less hard. There were few quick finishes - I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of games completed in under one hour over the weekend.

Megan Moruzzi (left) emulated her father (see U120 section) in completing the congress with an 100% over the board record, but her opening half point bye meant she could only reach 4½ points. Unlike her father she had to contend with the pressure of defending a ½ point lead over three players going into the last round.

James Rothwell (right) secured second place by beating Newcastle D teammate Mike Gawley in the last round. The prize for best junior in the section outside the place prizes was decided in the last round when Anne-Marie Moruzzi beat Carl Gawley, whilst Carl Mustafa won both his Sunday games to win the Kangaroo prize (more commonly known as slow starter prize).
